Gentlemen of the bar wrote to us, that apprehensions were entertained, that an attempt to hold Court, might excite ttiniplt and riot. This information was confirmed by a memorial from a number qt' respeptable inhabitants. ' Tar. judges now found themselves, compelled to determine whether they would proceed to S_t. Francisville, and exercise their judicial duties, in a part of the country, the inhabitants of which were disposed to question the authority of oilicers, whom the government of the United States appeared to disowri. ' _ THE general result of their reflections, aided by all the sources of information, and. every advice within their reach, was, ' that their authority, as tCI'4 ritorial judges, remained unimpaired in the seventh district of the former territory. THIS was to be rule oftheir conduct, although contrary to the opinion which they were bound to weigh and respect, but to which could not submit, without a dereliction of duty; the authority was to be exercised or surrendered: the latter alternative was adopted.
